Manual Lymphatic Drainage
MLD is a massage that can be performed after 72 hours post surgery and it assists with lymphatic drainage, potentially aiding recovery and reducing the length of rest. It is particularly useful for dogs recovering from cranial cruciate ligament surgery, although can be used after any surgery or injury.
This is a gentle and very different style of massage, promoting the reduction of swelling due to lymphoedoma, fluid that accumulates in one part of the body, often around the site of surgery or injury. The aim is to help move this fluid into the lymphatic system, which is responsible for filtering waste and fluids from the body. This in turn can help with pain relief, improve circulation and enhance the immune system.
MLD is not only for post surgery but may also be beneficial for dogs who are not able to tolerate a stronger touch at first. This form of massage may be used as a part of palliative care.
